The hydraulic transmission has a pump (18) driven from the engine (17) by a clutch (26). A hydraulic motor (22) drives the wheels with the torque controlled by a selector switch (30). Excess torque is stored in a reservoir (20) from which fluid can be drawn to boost starting and running up hills. The pressure reservoir has a large capacity and a movable bulkhead separating the hydraulic fluid from a nitrogen ballast volume. The nitrogen is compressed during storage and provides the stored energy when required. This provides a simple, large capacity storage. The vehicle is able to move with a low output engine, with extra torque provided by the reservoir. The reservoir is also topped up by regenerative braking.
|
