Cpds. of formula (I): (where R1=methyl, or ethyl R2,R3,=H or 1-8C alkanoyl, R4=H or 1-4C hydrocarbyl) (I) have the same type of activity to the corresponding cpds. without a hydroxy gp. at posn. 1 but have much stronger progestative activity and the secondary androgenic activity is reduced. (I) have also estrogenic activity. They are used to treat menstrual cycle irregularities and menopausal conditions optionally in combination with known estrogens.
