1,220,534. Ink transfer medium. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 18 April, 1969 [10 May, 1968], No. 19811/69. Heading D2B. [Also in Division C4] An ink transfer medium comprises a polymer binder layer having a transfer layer of ink-impregnated filler material embedded in the surface of the binder layer. This may be made by coating onto a polymer film a dispersion of an ink-receptive filler material in a solvent which is a solvent for the film, evaporating the solvent, and impregnating the filler material with a non-volatile ink. The binder layer may be of polyurethane, polyamide, polyester, polycarbonate, or polyethylene, and may contain up to 80% (by wt.) of a stiffening or complexing filler, e.g. carbon black. The binder layer may be supported on a temporary substrate, e.g. of polyethylene glycol terephthalate, polypropylene, polyethylene or paper, and this substrate removed after applying the transfer layer. The filler may be woodflour, asbestos fines, glass, diatomaceous earth, or a synthetic polymer such as powdered high-density polyethylene. The solvent may be ethanol, ethyl acetate, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, methylene chloride or toluene. Conventional ink compositions may be used e.g. containing dye-treated carbon black, nigrosine oleate or organic dyestuffs such as methyl violet base. The ink vehicle may be a mineral oil or a fatty acid or fatty acid ester. The transfer layer may contain 1-4 parts of filler to 1-2 parts (by wt) of ink. |
