An adjustable hydrodynamic coupling with variable filling, particularly for pumping sets, has primary and secondary bladed runners working in a fluid chamber connected by drain and inlet pipes to a stationary tank. Plungers in the inlet pipe regulate the fluid flow to the coupling. The control system includes a movable member (18) mounted directly in the inlet pipe or passage (15) so as to vary the cross-section, and two movable plungers (20, 24). One of these is subjected to the final pumping pressure, and the other to an adjustable and predetermined reference pressure.
