High zinc content paint - with zinc dust suspended by reaction prod. of alkyl polysilicate and hydrated metal salt

The paint is made of zinc duct and the prod. of reaction from an alkyl polysilicate. This prodt. is obtd. by the reaction of the polysilicate with a hydrated metallic salt in presence of an alkaline catalyst, pref. an alkali metal alkylate or an organic amine. The hydrated metallic salt is based on Ca, Mg or Zn. A typical compsn. comprises (a) 14.00 pts. Zn dust, 2.70 pts. ethyl silicate '40', 0.22 pts Bentone 34 (RTM) 0.22 pts hydrite UF (RTM), 0.40 pts. Zn borate-pentahydrate, 2 pts. xylene, with a later admixt. of 0.1 pts sodium methylate and 1.6 pts xylene. The zinc dust is maintained is suspension for long periods. The rheology of the paint is modified and the hardening rate of the film is accelerated. A paint which has a stable shelf life in one tin is obtd without having to add excessive amts of modification agents.
