1473184 5 - Oxo - carboxylic acid esters HOECHST AG 20 May 1974 [18 May 1973] 22412/74 Heading C2C 5-Oxo-carboxylic acid esters of formula where each R and R<SP>111</SP> which may be the same or different represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, alkyl-aryl group, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> represents an alkyl, aryl, or alkyl-aryl group and R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> together may represent an alkylene group, one prepared by reacting a ketone having one or more activated hydrogen atoms in the α-position with an acrylic acid ester of formula in the presence of an acid and of a primary amine, aliphatic amino alcohol, aliphatic amino carboxylic acid, #-amino propionate or Schiff's base or a mixture thereof as catalyst. The ketone may be acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl propyl ketone, diethyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl heptyl ketone, acetyl acetone, acetonyl acetone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, acetophenone, propiophenone, and benzyl methyl ketone and the acid may be formic, acetic, butyric, chloracetic, benzoic, oxalic, succinic, adipic, phthalic, hydrochloric sulphuric, phosphoric and carbonic acid. Examples describe the preparation of 5-oxohexanoic acid methyl, butyl, isobutyl, isopropyl esters, 2-methyl, 4-methyl, and 4-n-propyl-5- oxohexanoic acid methyl ester, 3-(2-oxocyclohexane) propionic acid methyl ester, 5-oxo-5- phenyl-pentanoic acid methyl ester and 5-oxo- 4-phenylhexanoic acid methyl ester.
