A polishing machine for eg. wood panels, has a polishing belt held down by a beam inside the belt, onto the surface of the panel, has a series of discharge holes through the beam for a pressure medium which forms a bearing cushion between the beam and teh back of the belt, at a higher pressure than the atmosphere. The beam is mounted between two rollers over which the polishing belt runs. - The pressure in the bearing cushion can be reduced or increased depending on whether only a polishing action is required or whether a dimensional correction of the panel is fed past the belt in a direction at right angles to the movement of the belt. The pressure of the cushion is automatically controlled, so that it is built up and faded out when the leading and trailing edges of the panel have passed half way across the width of the belt.
