1443656 Bi-polar electrodes HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 15 May 1974 [25 May 1973 (10)] 21602/74 Heading C7B A bi-polar electrode useful in electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides to chlorates comprises a central layer of valve metal, e.g. Ti, Ta or Nb, covered at least in part on the anodic side with a conductive, insoluble oxidation-resistant material, and having on its cathodic side a substantially hydrogenimpermeable barrier layer of W, Zn, B, Si, Cd, C, Ge, Al, Fe or a silicide which in turn has an outer coating of a cathodic material e.g. steel, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Fe or an alloy thereof. The anode material may be a Pt group metal, oxide or alloy or mixture thereof applied by electro-plating or by decomposition of an organometallic compound under conditions which do not oxidize the valve metal. The barrier material and valve metal may be applied either to other by sputtering, the cathode layer being applied by sputtering, vapour deposition or spraying. |
