1505473 Alkaline storage cell SAFT-SOC DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION 29 June 1976 [30 June 1975] 26926/76 Heading H1B An electrochemical cell (e.g. Ni-Cd cell) comprising a substantially cylindrical casing 1 containing at least three electrodes each of which is constituted by a plurality of arcuate portions arranged within the casing so as to form a substantially complete cylinder having a substantially annular cross-section and coaxial with the casing, at least one of the electrodes being a positive electrode 91, 92 and at least two of said electrodes being negative electrodes 82, 83 and 81, 84 and the or each positive electrode being sandwiched between two negative electrodes with separator sheets 12, 13 interposed between the positive electrode and two adjacent negative electrodes, each of the positive electrode portions 91, 92 being electrically connected to a positive terminal of the cell and each of the negative electrode portions being electrically connected to a negative terminal of the cell. The negative electrode may be formed by sintering nickel powder on to nickel foil 86 and impregnating with cadmium hydroxide wherein a single sheet of foil 86 forms the core for two arcuate portions 81, 82 which sandwich arcuate portion 91 of positive material the core being devoid of sinter material and being coated with insulating varnish to prevent contact with positive material in those regions of the sheet linking the two arcuate portions of the negative material. The positive electrode may comprise a mixture of nickel hydroxide, graphite or nickel powder, and PTFE pasted on to a current collector core 94, e.g. expanded nickel plated steel. The cell may comprise an insulating rod 15 urging the electrodes radially outward towards the casing and may comprise a plurality of coaxial sets of electrodes Fig. 7, end set consisting of a substantially cylindrical positive electrode sandwiches between two substantially cylindrical negative electrodes. |
