1466340 Converting lactose CORNING GLASS WORKS 3 Sept 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 38397/74 Heading C2S A method of converting the lactose in whey into glucose and galactose comprises reacting the whey, which may be ultrafiltered, with a composite comprising beta-galactosidase covalently bonded to a high surface area porous inorganic material, e.g. glass, preferably zirconia coated, by means of an intermediate silane coupling agent. The whey conversion is preferably carried out by passage through a plug flow-through column containing the composite and preferably containing an additional composite of glucose isomerase similarly covalently bonded to one of said materials whereby on passage sequentially through the two composites the lactose is converted firstly into glucose and galactose and some lactose which are then further converted by the glucose isomerase into a mixture of fructose, glucose, galactose and lactose. |
