1418896 Alkanesulphonates UNILEVER Ltd 19 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 13089/72 Heading C2C A process of separating constituents of a reaction product mixture resulting from the sulphitation of an olefinic species (C 8 -C 22 ) contained in an organic starting material and comprising: (a) the olefinic-bisulphite adduct (alkanesulphonate), (b) unreacted organic material including the olefinic species, (c) water, (d) a short chain alcohol (C 2 -C 4 ), (e) sulphite and bisulphite ions, comprises the steps of: (i) separating the solid adduct from the other components by an evaporative process, and condensing the other components to form a liquid phase, (ii) settling the liquid phase components and removing the top phase which consists essentially of the unreacted organic material; (iii) introducing bisulphite ions into the bottom phase of step (ii) and allowing the whole to settle, after solution of any solid added, to form two phases; (iv) separating the top phase, consisting essentially of an alcohol/water mixture and the bottom phase, which consists essentially of an aqueous solution of the bisulphite material. The process may be operated continuously. Bisulphite ions may be introduced by (i) addition of a mixture of solid sulphite and bisulphite, (ii) addition of an alkali and a metabisulphite, or (iii) addition of a hydroxide followed by SO 2 .
|
