1403433 Gas cutting MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 10 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971 30 Sept 1971] 37363/72 Heading B3V A metal plate 1 is cut by using two gas cutting jets 7, 8 one of which 7 is inclined to the plate surface and the other of which 8 impinges on the plate 1 immediately adjacent but rearwardly of the position of impingement of the one gas jet 7 so that prior to impingement the two gas jets 7, 8 project across, but do not interfere with each other when viewed laterally and so that two overlapping kerfs are produced. In an embodiment described, a cutting oxygen jet 7 from a nozzle 3 is advanced ahead of a cutting oxygen jet 8 from a nozzle 4 and is inclined at an angle of 20-50 degrees to the normal to the plate 1. The nozzle 3 may also be arranged obliquely relative to the cutting direction 2. The pressure of the oxygen jet 7 is preferably lower than that of the oxygen jet 8 such that it cannot along cut completely through the plate 1. In another embodiment, two cutting oxygen jets 8 are arranged on each side of the inclined cutting jet 7 (Pig. 6, not shown). The jets 7, 8 may alternatively emanate from a single torch assembly. |
