<p>The outside of the tyre trad (12) is fitted with a brand of flexible material (10) whose outside surface is impregnated with grip elements (17). These include grit chippings, steel points or any abrasive compound. The band provides grip on icy roads without damaging the road surface. It is reinforced by fibre inserts to prevent it from stretching and loosening from the tyre. The band is secured by snap fasteners on the overlapping ends, or by adhesive layers. Improved adhesion is provided by moulded ridges (22) on the back surface to grip into the tyre tread pattern. When the abrasive has been worn off the band is cut from the tyre and replaced by a fresh one. The band is inexpensive and can be fitted without special tools.</p> |
