<p>Materials capable of being rotted down are converted to compost in a heap; the raw material being prepared by reducing the hard substances such as glass, stone, bones, hard plastics, etc. to a granular size of 1 mm, and the soft material to a size of 10 mm at most, so that further sieving is unnecessary. The material is laid on to the side surface of the heap in shallow strips, whilst thin layers are brought from the old side, mixed, brought to the normal optimal moisture content and laid in strips on the heap afresh. When finely dispersed matter such as sedimented sludge is used this is first of all pelletised to a preferred size of 10 mm. Overcomes the problems of the development of anaerobic zones in the heap, and difficulties of sieving material with too high a moisture content. There is no problem of disposing of materials which fail to pass the sieves. The finer preparation of the material results in an intensification of the rotting process, and to an explosive increase of the micro-organisms concerned. This causes additional heat to be developed which effectively vapourises the water content so that rain or snow conditions do not cause excessive humidity.</p> |
