[Also in Division C7] A non-metallic surface is contacted with a solution of white or yellow phosphorus dissolved in an organic solvent to deposit phosphorus at the surface, and with at least one medium chosen from water, a liquid surfactant and an aqueous solution of a surfactant. The surface may be contacted with an emulsion comprised of water as the dispersed phase and a solution of white or yellow phosphorus dissolved in an organic solvent as the continuous phase. Alternatively the surface may be treated in sequential steps with a solution of white or yellow phosphorus dissolved in an organic solvent, and with water, e.g. by dipping into and withdrawing from a two-phase bath comprising an upper layer of at least one medium chosen from water, surfactant or aqueous solution surfactant and a lower layer of the phosphorus solution. The treated surface may subsequently be contacted with a solution of a metal salt or complex which is capable of reacting with phosphorus to form a metal phosphide, the metal being selected from groups IB, IIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB and VIII of the periodic Table, and then optionally with a solution of a compound containing a stable anion selected from OH-, BR 3 H-, AIR 3 H- and mixtures thereof (wherein each R is selected from alkyl, aryl and hydrogen) the stable anion being present in such concentration as to avoid precipitation of a metal salt from the metal salt or complex. The surface may then be coated with metals by electroless and/or electrolytic plating methods. Suitable surfaces are cloth, paper, wood, cork, cardboard, clay, porcelain, leather, porous glass and asbestos cement, and plastics, an extensive list of which is provided. The plastics can be filled with glass fibre/powder/beads, asbestos, talc, wood flour, carbon, dyes, pigments and waxes. The substrates may be in the form of mouldings, sheets, rods, tubes, fibres, coatings, films and fabrics. The surfactants can be anionic, cationic and non-ionic, examples of which are given. Preferred surfactants are alkyl amides.
