<p>Aqs. compsns. partic. for coating comprise the solubilised reactn. prod. (I) of an epoxy org. cpd. and a cpd. contg. phenolic OH gp(s). and gp(s) hydrolysable to COOH gp., pref. ester, amide or nitrile gps. The compsns. are used for coating any substrate e.g. wood, metal, glass, textile fabrics, plastics, foams, etc. The compsn. is storage stable and can be applied by usual means, e.g. brushing, spraying, dipping or anodic electrodeposition. The crosslinked coatings are resistant to saponification, hydrolysis and saline spraying and have adequate hardness. The physical props. of the reactn. prod. (I), e.g. flexibility, can be varied by reacting, prior to hydrolysis, with polymers contg. active H e.g. polyamines, polyols, polymercaptans, etc. Useful prods. may also be obtd. by mixing the reactn. prod. (I) with usual vehicle paints such as latex, water-soluble acrylic resins, etc. Pref. epoxy cpd. contains one or more 1,2-epoxy gps. and cpd. (B) is of formula (HO)n-(W)m, where n and m are >=1, pref. 1-4, R is an org. gp. contg. at least one aryl gp. with one of the OH gps. attached to the aryl gp., and W is the gp. hydrolysable to COOH, pref. -COOR', -CON(R")2 or CN, where R' is lower alkyl, and R" is H and/or lower alkyl. Prefd. (B) is an alkyl hydroxybenzoate (esp. methyl p-hydroxy benzoate or methyl salicylate), alkyl 4,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)pentanoate or phenolphthalein. Pref. compsn. also contains an active H-contg. cpd. of av. functionality 2, and crosslinking agent chosen from aminoplast resins, phenolic resins and (semi-blocked polyisocyanates.</p> |
