Thermal reactor for completing combustion of IC engine exhaust - has flame holder welded to casing and projecting into combustion chamber

The thermal reactor for completing combustion of IC vehicle engine exhaust gases is for engines with two (9, 10) or more separate exhaust stubs coming together to form a common outlet/inlet (11) to the reactor. The reactor casing (2) is dished (6) around that junction (4) to a shape which permits a gastight (welded) joint (13) to be made. A flame holder (14) also welded to the casing (15) projects into a combustion hamber (3) within the reactor through an opening (5) in the chamber wall. The single outlet pipe from the reactor and the stub pipes between cylinder head and reactor are so connected and separately supported as to free the reactor from any outside mechanical loading. However, they nevertheless absorb any relative movement between cylinder block and reactor, due to differing thermal expansion.
