The semicircular hydrodynamic bearing pad (1) is provided with a radial lubrication groove (3) which has its maximum width and depth at its open end on the pad edge (2). The bearing pad is rolled from a flat plate, and the groove (3) can be made by machining or by pressing before the pad is rolled into shape. The decreasing width of the lubrication groove (3) in the direction of shaft rotation produces hydrodynamic pressure to support the shaft. It also ensures that cavitation and erosion is minimised. This is due to the even distribution of lubricant which prevents the formation of air bubbles.
