Eddy producing guides for pipe elbow - employs two twisted strips spaced equally from centre line of elbow

A pipe elbow particularly for conveying hot gases has guide surfaces in the inlet area, to influence the flow by producing eddies. The guide surfaces are positioned symmetrically about the centre line of the elbow, and spaced from it. This produces oppositely rotating eddies, which extend from the wall to the centre line of the elbow. These guides may be two helically twisted strips (5, 6) or in an alternative design, each guide consists of two strips frmed into a cross shape (10, 11) and helically twisted. In another design, a triangular baffle plate is used instead of two guides. This plate is central in the tube, and angled.
