The document shredding machine with cutting or tearing system has a downstream compactor for cut material. The shreading arrangement continues to work during the compacting cycle. The compacting is able to deal with the shreaded material produced during the working cycle. The compacting arrangement has two opposite compacting chambers (13, 14) and in each of these acts a common double stroke ram (16) in alternating cycles. Both compacting chambers are arranged symmetrically to the inlet opening for the shredded material arriving from the shredding machine.
