The unit is particularly for investigation of the organs of the human body, and comprises a number of converters (31) which are caused to emit ultrasonic waves, and a lens (40) concentrates the waves. The converters are fixed to a surface of the lens, so as to transmit the waves directly into it. The converters can be mounted in rows running in two directions on the lens surface, and one set of them can be selectively used to emit waves in the desired direction. The lens surface to which they are fixed can be convex, and its other surface concave, each centred on a common point.
