Prodn. comprises adding a cpd. (I) of the formula Ti(OR)n-X4-n (in which R is a hydrocarbon gp.; X is halogen; O =n =4) pref. to a fluidised bed of Ziegler support material (II) contg. Mg and treating the prod. with an alcohol (III) or phenol (IV). Catalyst may be used in the polymerisation of 1-olefins, esp. C2H4 or mixts. of max. 40 wt. % C2H4 and other 1-olefins. High productivity in the prodn. of high density polyethylene and copolymers with properties making them suitable for injection moulding is obtd. The particle size distribution is also improved, with a very small proportion of very fine particles.
