The number plate (1) has a front plate (2) and a retaining surface (12). The retaining surface can be part of the car body (13) and is dished towards the number plate and recessed into the car body sufficient to accommodate the number plate assembly. The number plate is fixed to the front plate (2) and to the car body of threaded bolts (10). The front plate (2) is fitted with a leaf spring (11) of transparent plastics which supports the disintegration of the number plate during an attempt to remove it from the vehicle.
