A press for crimping an electrical connector to an end 6 of a wire 4, Fig. 13, comprises a ram 38, Fig. 4, carrying a die 34, 36 over an anvil 28, 30, jaws 118, 120, Fig. 1, for straightening the wire, mechanism for operating the jaws and moving them, when open, towards a wire 4 adjacent the anvil so that they close about the wire, and mechanism for moving the jaws towards the anvil and relatively to the wire to straighten the wire and thus position it in a connector to be crimped. A strip 1 of connectors is fed to the anvil, each connector having limbs to be crimped to the end 6, adjacent limbs for gripping the insulation and a connecting land severed by a blade 22 on the ram. The press may be a removable part of a leadmaking machine (not shown) having a conveyer with pairs of spaced jaws 14, 16, Fig. 13, for gripping the wire. A housing 40 is attached by upper links 44 and a lower link 60 to guides 33 for the ram, and a follower 58 on the back of the housing is held against a cam 54 on the ram by a spring 52. Within the housing 40 is a slide 76 operated by a pneumatic cylinder and formed with a passage for a further slide 84 on which the jaws 118, 120 are mounted by a pivot 104. An adjustable eccentric abutment 86, 87 mounted on the housing 40, extends through slots 89, 90, 91 in the slides, and a spring 96 acts between the slide 84 and a pin 92 carried by the slide 74 and engaging slots 94 in the slide 84. Operation.-When the wire conveyer stops, the cylinder 72 is operated automatically for lowering the slides 74, 84 with the jaws 118, 120. Continued movement of slide 74, after slide 84 has been arrested by the abutment 86, causes arms 116, Fig. 1, on the slide 74 to close the jaws against the pressure of a return spring 114. The ram 38 is then lowered, moving the cam 54 past the follower 58 so that the spring 52 moves the housing 40 through an arcuate path and slides the jaws along the wire to straighten the wire, thus locating it in the connector before the connector is crimped. The arms 116 may be adjusted to vary the position of the jaws. |
