Novel silane of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are each methoxy, ethoxy or propoxy; X is H or a 1-4C aminoalkyl radical, n = 2, 3 or 4 and Ra is a residue of an antimicrobial phenolic cpd. Ra is pref. the residue derived from phenol, bisphenol or chlorinated diphenyl ether; a dihydroxy phenol carrying 1 or more Cl atoms or 6-9C alkyl radicals, a p-hydroxy- or o-hydroxy-benzoic acid or a 1-12C alkyl ester thereof, n is pref. 3 and R1 and R2 pref. ethoxy radicals, Ra is most pref. derived from hexachlorophene, 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether or pentachlorophenol) are antimicrobial agents which adhere to various substrates such as glass, ceramics and polymers to protect their surfaces from microbial attack, and their properties are maintained even after repeated washing. |
