1465942 Vehicle safety devices INVENTING AB 6 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 05441/74 Heading B7B [Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing a tubular enelosure for storing or transporting fluids or fluidized solid particles under pressure which may be used as a collision shield for vehicles comprises forming a readily expandible inner tube by joining the edges of a sheet or sheets of thin flexible stretchable fluid impermeable material so that it is expandable from a normally flat cross-section to a tubular cross-section, and forming a normally flat outer covering by joining the edges of a sheet or sheets of material less flexible than that of the inner tube, so that the outer cover limits the degree of expansion of the inner tube upon expansion thereof. The outer wall may consist of an upper part 6 and a lower part 7 of strong flexible material, e.g. a woven fabric of nylon or glass fibres or other synthetic or natural fibre material seamed as at 8 with rivets or by screwing or welding or may be of a single strip of material folded over. The inner wall can also be formed of separate strips of material seamed along contacting edges, or of a single strip folded over and is preferably formed of a thermoplastics material, e.g. a polyolefine, p.v.c., or a so called plastics rubber or a mixture of polythene and ethylene-vinylacetate or polythene and plastics rubber or of polyurethane. The inner wall can also incorporate pleats 9 to aid in the expansion thereof. The inner wall and outer wall can be free to move relative to each other or can be joined pointwise or zonewise. Various other forms of tube constructions are disclosed in Figs. 7 to 14 and 21 (not shown) and the invention can also be applied to form branch tubes (Figs. 2, 3 or 4, not shown). |
