<p>The device comprises a hand-held portion 1 that incorporates a plurality of keys 5-9 for operation by the fingers and thumb of the holder's hand. Combinations of key presses enable the user to create messages that are shown on a scrollable display 13 and voiced 18 by a voice synthesis unit. The device may be coupled to a telephone, fax machine, computer or other communication device via sockets 21, 22.
