The guard screen comprises a box shaped housing closed by a sliding panel parallel to the grinding disc plane, the panel sliding horizontally and normally to the disc axis on rollers on a static housing rail. The panel is actuated by a hydraulic jack and wedges into a secure closure station. The lower edge is confined during sliding by a guide channel and the locking of the panel at closure is effected by the forceful engagement of opposed convergent faces on the panel and housing, three such locks being used: two on the top edge and one on the bottom.
