The metal is sepd. from a heat destructible coating at the edges to be welded and the space formed may be (partly) filled with a heat insulating material and opt. with a fitting which aligns the edges. The coating may be recessed for the insulant and the metal returned to its original position or the metal parts may be left in their bent shape (esp. at a 70 degree angle) so that weld-edge prepn. can be reduced. Method is esp. used to connect pipes lined with glass, plastics or rubber and the lining is protected from weld-heat without changing the pipe i.d.
