1414834 2-Pyrrolidone polymers S F PUSZTASZERI 20 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13347/73 Heading C3R Substantially pure anhydrous 2-pyrrolidone is polymerized by (1) mixing the 2-pyrrolidone with a substantially anhydrous alkaline reactant selected from alkali metals, alkali metal hydroxides and alkali metal bicarbonates in a mole ratio of 10-27 : 1 and heating the mixture under vacuum to a temperature of from 100-120‹ C. to react the alkaline reactant with the 2-pyrrolidone to form a salt and water, the latter being removed by distillation (2) cooling the reaction mixture and bubbling a dry gaseous polymerization activator through the solution, at less than 48‹ C., the amount of gaseous polymerization activator being sufficient to react substantially all of the alkali metal in the 2-pyrrolidone salt, (3) adding a drying agent to the mixture, just prior to polymerization in an amount of from 1% to about 5% by weight, based on the weight of the mixture to be polymerized and (4) polymerizing the mixture at from 48‹ to 52‹ C.
|
