<p>1512730 Polymerisation catalyst BASF AG 29 Aug 1975 [30 Aug 1974] 35686/75 Heading BIE [Also in Division C3] A titanium component for use in the Ziegler polymerization of olefins is obtained by dry grinding, in a vibratory ball mill at a grinding acceleration of 30 to 80 m. sec<SP>-2</SP>, a mixture of (a) TiCl 3 . n AlCl 3 where n is 0 to 0.7 and (b) 0.01 to 1 mole per mole of (a) of a compound of the formula PO m X 3 , where m is 0 or I, X is R, OR or NR 2 and R is hydrocarbyl, in which procedure (i) a mill of useful volume 2 to 200 litres is used, (ii) the mill is first charged with 0.1 to 120 kg. of (a), (iii) thereafter the required amount of (b) is added over 2 to 100 hours, continuously or in small portions, whilst grinding at -50‹C to -5‹C, (iv) the mixture is then brought to 5 to 60‹C, over a period of 0.1 to 5 hours, and kept at these temperatures for 1 to 100 hours, whilst continuing grinding, (v) a finely divided particulate 1-alkene polymer, having a particle size of 1 to 10,000Á, a Tg of -100‹ to 60‹C and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.1 to 20, is added and (vi) the mixture is kept at -50‹ to -5‹C for 1 to 30 minutes, whilst continuing the grinding. The Examples refer to the milling of T : Cl 3 . 1/3AlCl 3 and n Bu 3 P, with addition of particulate polypropylene or poly-4-methyl pentene 1 in stage (v).</p> |
