A cable is coated with a plastic coating in an extruder and advanced to a vulcanizing chamber which is separated from the extruder. Immediately adjacent the entry end to the vulcanizing chamber is a sealing tube through which the cable passes guided by internal guide plates with guide apertures for the cable. A sealing fluid is pumped into the sealing tube through an inlet to produce a pressure in the sealing tube slightly greater than the pressure in the vulcanizing chamber. The various compartments formed between the guide plates in the sealing tube are connected to exhaust ducts. The cable passes through a free space between the extruder and sealing tube so that the coating can be visually inspected for faults.
