Corrugated veneers are made in four stages. The freshly felled or remoistened tree trunk is pared into a continuous veneer by a knife (2) and slit lengthwise to the required widths. The veneer is then crimped between ribbed rollers, and moved on between corrugated belts. It is dried somewhat so that it retains the crimping. Then it passes between parallel, flat surfaced chain belts, which move more slowly than the previous ones, so that the corrugations are compressed together into closed loops. It is then glued, so that the loops adhere where they touch, and finally dried. Machines carrying out these stages are described. The veneers are used as cores for sandwich panels.
|
