Coating liquid for producing a hydrophilic film comprises a first titanium dioxide (TiO2) solution and a second solution containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) and/or aluminium oxide (Al2O3). The TiO2 solution is produced by (a) mixing a solution containing a titanium (Ti) alkoxide (I) with a diol (II) of formula R1-C(R2)(OH)-R3-C(R5)(OH)-R4 (II-A) and/or R1-C(R2)(OH)-C(R5)(OH)-R4 (II-B) and hydrolysing the resultant solution containing a Ti complex. In (II-A) and (II-B), R1 = H or CpH2p+1; R2 = CqH2q+1; R3 = CrH2r; R4 = H or CxH2x+1; R5 = H or CyH2y+1; p, q, x, y = 1-5; r = 1-3. Also claimed are methods of producing the composition by mixing and a hydrophilic coating and the hydrophilic articles (mouldings).
