In the prodn. of pipes, esp. large pipes by the UOE process, in which the pipes are calibrated by cold expansion after internal and external seam welding, the novelty is that the pipes are conditioned by combined cold expansion and cold redn. in a sequence and amount dependent on the requisite profile. Pref. on-shore pipes are subjected to up to 2% redn. and then up to 4% expansion to the desired size, while off-shore pipes are subjected to up to 2% expansion and then up to 4% redn. to the desired size.
