The machine has a vertical shaft (7) which carries three blades (5) which pivot on horizontal spindles (1). The spindles (1) are near the upper ends of the blades (5) so that the wind force tends to rotate the blade but rotation in one direction is prevented by the stop (2) which abuts against the shaft (7). A rotatable cage (4) which surrounds the rotor has a guide bar (6) which rotates the blades to the horizontal position as the blades move against the direction of the wind. The cage is aligned to the wind by the vane (10). The device can be used in river currents in which case the vane (10) is unnecessary.
