Liquid travels through passages in the housing, which holds a stepped piston whose largest diameter portion bears elastically against the machine head. The piston reciprocates under the action of the liquid, striking an anvil fixed to the tool at the head end. On the piston is a stepped ring type differential valve performing the same reciprocating movement so as to deliver the liquid to atmosphere or to a chamber below the piston. The piston is divided into two halves, the larger one (3) acting as the hammer and the smaller one (4) purely as a piston, while an elastic component (5) fits between the halves.
