Microorganism deactivation gas discharge lamp - with pressurized neon filling containing antimony and iodine powder

A gas discharge lamp for the deactivation of microorganisms based on a metallic halide uses antimony as the metal and iodine as the halogen. The pref. gas filling is neon at 30 Torr, contg. 0.049-0.057 mg I and 0.016-0.024 mg Sb per cm3 of volume. This requires much less volume than low-pressure mercury lamps and has more than 80% of the latter within the effective wavelength. It is free from the 400-450 nm wavelength of high-pressure mercury lamps which causes a re-activation of the microorganisms.
