The hydrostatic/aerostatic bearing comprises a shaft (1) arranged in a housing (2) with cylindrical recesses connected through ports (19) to a pressure source. Each recess contains a roller which throttles the flow of pressure medium through the port. A load on the shaft slightly displaces the rollers relative to their ports so that flow through these ports is adjusted to balance the load. The rollers themselves float and may rotate in the recesses. The roller axes are parallel to the shaft axis in the case of radial bearing, whereas, for a thurst bearing, the roller are arranged with axes in a radial direction on the shaft end face.
