A coal cutting machine supported above a conveyor, and having a rotary cutter (10) as in 2300224, has a dust collection system with a double-walled flexible hood (2) spaced from the cutting face. Thus it forms an enclosed area over the cutting machine. This is connected to the air distributor. Its bottom edge is supported by a flexible screen portion (7) mounted behind the conveyor. The support member (6) for this portion (7) is hollow, with a grid (8) at the top. The part of the flexible portion (7) immediately above the grid has suction openings (9) connected to the suction openings (11) in the hood above. This enables more dust to be collected at a low level, for narrow seams.
