The moving contact of the vacuum circuit breaker is reciprocated linearly by a drive push-rod in alignment in relation to the fixed contact. In the course of the push-rod (4) is incorporated a liquid buffer, consisting of a cylinder (10) and a piston (11). Preferably the buffer contains a spring (13) and which continuously pushes the piston in its end position. The buffer cavity, filled with liquid may be discharged through one or several outlets (12) via a throttle valve (16). An additional non-return valve (17) may be incorporated in the discharge line, possibly in a single module with a throttle valve. The driven part (14) of the push-rod may have a greater stroke than its part near the contact.
