1464430 Selective electro-plating STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 10 April 1975 [18 April 1974] 16999/74 Heading C7B Articles e.g. electrical contacts are electro-plated in selected areas, by immersing them as cathode in a plating bath in sufficiently close proximity to an anodic wire or ribbon which is continuously passed through the bath. Whereby plating occurs only on an area in juxtaposition with the anode. The wire or ribbon may be made of or coated with the plating metal (e.g. gold, optionally as a coating on stainless steel or Ti) or may be inert with the plating metal being in solution in the bath. The bath may be recirculated with the pump outlet being directed along the wire or ribbon. A subsidiary anode for "flash" coating the whole article may be provided. "Robber" electrodes may modify the electric field in the plating region and permanent or electromagnets may provide desired bath motions. When a soluble continuous loop anode is used, it may be replenished by passage as cathode through a tubular soluble anode of the plating metal in a second bath. The articles may be conveyed through the bath in Co - or countercurrent to the anode. |
