The CO2 maybe added as a gas or as dry ice, pref. using >=1.5 times the amt. needed to obtain a satd. soln. in the mixing water. Alternatively the CO2 may be added via water which is at >=2 atmos. and contains CO2. With conventional methods of adding CO2 to accelerate hardening, the CO2 does not reach the interior of the mixt. and therefore more CO2 must be used than is really required. The invention avoids excessive use of CO2 and produces faster initial hardening. The use of accelerators employed to decrease hardening times can be eliminated.
