1358816 Preparation of secondary aromatic amines AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 22 Jan 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 3234/73 Heading C2C Secondary amines are prepared by (a) condensing a mono- or polyhydroxy aromatic compound with an excess of a primary aromatic amine at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalytic amount of FeCl 3 , until substantially all of the water of reaction has been removed, (b) adding an anhydrous metal phosphate to the mixture resulting from step (a), in an amount sufficient to neutralize the FeCl 3 and tie up any free iron present in the mixture, (c) distilling said mixture under reduced pressure to remove the excess of primary aromatic amine, (d) filtering off any inorganic salts present in the mixture after distillation, and (e) recovering a secondary aromatic amine from the filtrate.
