Catalyst contains a multimetal sulfide phase consisting of sulfur and at least one element selected from group IIIB including lanthanides and actinides, group IVB, or group VIIB and VIII. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of the catalyst comprising: preparing a reaction mixture containing elements selected from group IIIB including lanthanides and actinides, group IVB, or group VIIB and VIII, and a carbon source and a sulfur source; and heating the reaction mixture to above 40o C under a pressure of above 0.01 MPa.
