<p>A process for catalytically hydrodesulphurizing a sulphur-containing petroleum oil that contains residual components and metallic contaminants normally capable of acting as catalyst poisons, comprises contacting the oil with hydrogen under hydrodesulphurization conditions in the presence of a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component composited with an alumina base, said composite catalyst having not more than 15% of the volume of the pores having a radius of 0 to 300</>rA in any 10</>rA increment of pore radius in the range of pores having a 0 to 120</>rA radius, and also having at least about 10% of such pore volume in pores of radius less than 30</>rA, at least 15% in pores of radius greater than 30</>rA and less than 70</>rA, and at least 30% of radius greater than 70</>rA and less than 120</>rA. Preferred conditions are a partial pressure of H2 of 35-280 kg./cm.2 gauge, a temperature of 316-454 DEG C., a space velocity of 0.1-10 LHSV and a H2 : oil ratio of 17.8 to 267 m.3/100 litres. The hydrogenating component may be at least one metal of Group VIb or VIII in a form capable of promoting hydrogenation reactions, e.g. oxides and sulphides of Mo, W, Ni and/or Co. The catalyst preferably has a surface area of at least 100 sq. m/g.ALSO:An alumina support having a particular pore volume distribution for use in a catalyst for the hydrodesulphurization of petroleum oils can be prepared by precipitation at pH 4.5-6.0 of Al(OH)3 from an aqueous solution of Al2(SO4)3 at 71-99 DEG C. by addition of NH3 or NH4OH. After aging, the precipitate is washed free of sulphate ions and dried to give a crystalline mixture of boehmite and bayerite olumines. This is calcined with a hot gas at 538-677 DEG C. to effect substantial dehydration of the water of constitution to give a product satisfying the following conditions: not more than 15% of the volume of the pore having a radius in the range 0-300*?* in any 10*?* increment of pore radius in the range of pores of 0-120 *?* radius; at least about 10% of such pore volume in pores of radius less than 30 *?*; at least 15% in pores of radius greater than 30 *?* and less than 70 *?*; and at least 30% of radius greater than 70 *?* and less than 120 *?*.</p> |
