1423302 lso(thio)cyanate terminated polymers; block polymers FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 12 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 1863/73 Headings C3P and C3R Polymers containing at least one terminal isocyanate or isothiocyanate group are obtained by polymerization of at least one monomer, which is an olefinic nitrile, ester, acid, nitro compound or amide, conjugated diene, vinyl substituted aromatic compound, a vinyl pyridine, a vinyl quinoline, a dihydronaphthalene, a thioketone, an aldehyde or thioaldehyde, an oxirane or thiirane, or an oxetane or thietane, in the presence of an organoalkali metal initiator and reacting the product with a compound containing at least two isocyanate or isothiocyanate groups to produce a mixture of coupled and terminated products. The products are then reacted with active hydrogen containing monomer(s) to form a polymer block attached thereto via the terminal iso(thio)cyanate group. Specific terminal polymer blocks are polyamide, (thio)urethane polymer, (thio)urea polymer, mixed ureaurethane polymer and polyimide. Where a polyisocyanate is used in formation of such condensation blocks it may be constituted by an excess thereof added in the termination step. The block polymer products may include some of the non-blocked condensation polymer and the coupled polymers and may be peroxy cured, optionally in the presence of fillers. In typical examples, butadiene or styrene or a mixture thereof are polymerized using butyl lithium and various hydrocarbon solvent and suspension media, including tetrahydrofuran or tetramethylethylene diamine in some cases as randomizing or 1,2-/1,4- structure controlling agents, followed by reaction with isocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate or isophorone diisocyanate, and block copolymerization with caprolactam; m - phenylenediamine, water or hexamethylene diamine/toluene diisocyanate; pentane diol/toluene diisocyanate; pentane diol/hexamethylene diamine/toluene diisocyanate; and benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride/m-phenylene diamine.
|
