<p>1433563 Cutting glass COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 3 May 1974 [4 May 1973] 19511/74 Heading C1M Glass is cut by successively traversing two beams of laser light along the line of cut, the beams being focused on the glass. As shown (Fig. 1) a laser 2 emits a beam 4 which is split into two beams 6, 8 by a semi-reflective plate 10. A mirror system 12, 14, 18 focus the beams on opposite sides of the glass plate to be cut, the mirrors being movable to traverse the beams along the line of cut. A laser beam 4 may alternatively be split into two beams and focused on the glass by a pair of movable mirrors 24, 26 arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The laser is preferably a carbon dioxide laser operating in the infra-red range. A jet of oxygen is blown on to the line of cut during application of the laser beams. The cut may be started using a diamond or alumina body and completed using the laser beams or vice versa.</p> |
