摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a large type screen at a low cost, require less power consumption, and moreover, display a necessary moving picture without impairing an updating speed by providing the device with a means for selecting a start line and an end line for updating a display screen, and displaying the moving picture in an area between the start line and the end line. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element 100 has three layers of laminated cells of which each seals chiral-nematic liquid crystal between a substrate where scanning electrode groups are formed thereon and a substrate where signal electrode groups are formed thereon, to display a picture in full color. A CPU 20 receives picture data and data concerning a display area from an external device such as a personal computer and a communication line via an interface 50, and further, discriminates whether the picture data is a still picture data or a moving picture data. And, the CPU 20 selects an update start line and an update end line and executes display updation (moving picture display). Therefore, a time interval for displaying a moving picture can be shorter than that for updating the whole screen.
