A vulcanisable fluoro-polymer contains 50-85 (50-80) wt.% tetrafluoroethylene, 10-45 (15-40)% vinylidene fluoride and 5-40 (5-20)% hexafluoropropylene. The copolymer can be worked at high temp., without the use of special plant. It can be used in the thermoplastic, non-vulcanised state, or in the heat-hardened, vulcanised state. The copolymer is esp. used to sheath metal wires and cables. Copolymerisation is in dispersion or suspension. The copolymer is vulcanised in presence of hexafluoro-iso-propylidene-bis-(4-hydroxybenzene), benzyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride and a metal (hydr)oxide. In an example, the modulus of the vulcanisate was the same as that of the unvulcanised copolymer, but the elongation at break had been lowered from 360% to 190%. |
